Local man dies hours after being found in bay near Longport home
(Longport, NJ) On May 28, 2021 at approximately 7:22pm, Longport Police officers were dispatched to the area of 22nd Avenue and the bay for a welfare check. Investigation on scene revealed Andrew Stern, 60 of Longport, had gone missing and was believed to have possibly fallen into the bay.
At approximately 7:29pm, Longport officers were advised that multiple witnesses had observed a body in the water off 33rd Avenue in the bay. United States Coast Guard arrived on location and retrieved the body just off Monroe Avenue in Margate. Longport / Margate Police and Fire were on location assisting the Coast Guard with lifesaving efforts.
In the early morning hours of Saturday, May 29, 2021, Stern succumbed to his injuries. The incident is being investigated by the Longport Police Department; however preliminary investigation has revealed no evidence of foul play at this time. An autopsy will be performed.
