Police Recruits

Education & Experience

Must possess an Associate Degree or is currently matriculating at a college or university offering a Baccalaureate Degree and has earned 64 credits toward a Degree or served 4 years active military service.

Qualifications

  1. Must be a United States Citizen and resident of the state of New Jersey.
  2. Must be 21 years of age at the time of application.
  3. Possession of a valid New Jersey drivers license prior to employment.
  4. Must have NO criminal record.
  5. Must be of sound moral character.
  6. Must pass each phase of the screening/examination process as outlined below.

Screening / Examination Process

The Borough of Longport reserves the right to consider only the most highly qualified applicants for the succeeding examination process:

  1. Written Exam
    • Consisting of multiple choice and/or essay.
  2. Physical Agility Testing
    • Battery of Tests consisting of:
      • Push-ups, sit-ups, high jump, 300 meter sprint, and a 1.5 mile run.
  3. Extensive Background Check
    • Candidates successfully completing all previous portions of the testing will be scheduled for a background investigation. The investigator will check your personal references, your criminal history, your driving record, your employment record and other background information.
    • Candidates will be evaluated from the information gathered from the background investigation. This information will be held in strict confidence and will not be released. This information will be used exclusively to aid in the selection of police candidates.
  4. Psychological Examination
    • Exam will be conducted by a Psychiatrist or Psychologist chosen by the Borough of Longport.
    • If a candidate has already completed a similar test with the last 12 months, as a condition of employment for another agency, the Borough of Longport reserves the right and may utilize the results of that examination for its own purposes.
  5. Oral Interview with:
    • The Chief of Police.
    • A panel of officers chosen by the Chief of Police.
    • An interview with the Appropriate Authority of the Borough of Longport.
  6. Post-Employment Medical Examination/Drug Screen
    • Pass a physical examination form a medical doctor (M.D.), Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.), Physician Assistant (PA), or Nurse Practitioner (NP), chosen by the Borough of Longport.
    • Pass a Drug test as out in this agency’s Standard Operating Procedures (2.13) and in accordance with the New Jersey Attorney General’s Guidelines.

If a Police Training Commission (P.T.C.) "certifiable status" has not been obtained by the time an offer of employment is made, police trainees must attend a New Jersey Police Academy and successfully complete all of the necessary components required. Upon graduating, trainees must complete an eight week Field Training program with the Longport Police Department. All new hires will be subject to a one (1) year probationary period beginning the day after their graduation or first day of work if already certified.
