We currently have four trained full-time Public Safety Telecommunicators who are certified in CPR, Basic Telecommunication, 9-1-1, Emergency Medical Dispatch and NCIC (National Crime Information Center).

The Communications Department is manned 24 hours a day/ 7 days per week.
One Public Safety Telecommunicator is on duty for an eight-hour shift.

To be a certified Public Safety Telecommunicator, each candidate must attend a Basic Telecommunicator 9-1-1 course and an Emergency Medical Dispatch Course that also requires CPR certification. Once the certifications are obtained, the Telecommunicator candidate can attend an 80-hour dispatch training internship program giving them the experience and knowledge needed to become a full-time Public Safety Telecommunicator.

The responsibilities of each PUBIC SAFETY TELECOMMUNICATOR are the following:

1) answer and/or refer each walk-in question or complaint to the proper authority.
2) dispatching police/fire/rescue to any Longport area in need
3) proficient in the use of:
a) NCIC (National Crime Information Center)
b) INFOCOP (mobile data terminal in each patrol vehicle)
c) In House CAD (computer automated dispatch) system
d) ATS (automated traffic system)
e) ACS (automated complaint system)
f) 9-1-1 (answering and dispatching calls)

This department also hires part-time PST’s allowing the full-time PST’s more opportunity to take their desire time off.
