D.A.R.E. - Drug Abuse Resistance Education

OVERVIEW

D.A.R.E. LogoD.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) is a collaborative effort by certified law enforcement officers, educators, students, parents and the community to offer an education program in the classroom to prevent or reduce drug abuse and violence among children and youth. The emphasis is to help students recognize and resist the direct and subtle pressures that influence them to experiment with alcohol, tobacco, marijuana, inhalants or other drugs to engage in violence. Since 70% - 90% of all crimes are drug related it is absolutely vital thaw we reach the children of America before its too late. D.A.R.E. works because it surrounds children with support and encouragement from all sides.

ORGANIZATION

The program content for DARE is organized into seventeen 45 – 60 minute lessons to be taught by a law enforcement officer with suggested extended activities to be incorporated into other instruction by the classroom teacher. The officer is assigned to the school one day a week for one semester to conduct weekly lessons usually in grades 5 or 6. Student’s participation in this program is usually incorporated as an integral part of the school’s curricular offering in health, science, social studies, language arts or other subjects. The classroom teacher usually maintains a supportive role in classroom management while the officer is teaching and should incorporate the DARE program participation by students as an integral part of the students final evaluation.

Drugs and kids. It's a reality every parent must face--head-on. You can't deny it. You can't ignore it. But as parents or other concerned caregivers, you are your children's greatest resource.
